Music has been called the universal language.
It can and does help to promote understanding where written language falls short.
Music can soothe emotions, heal us and excite our enthusiasm.
We now know from actual research that active participation, even active listening, can have positive effects in many other areas of learning.
The study of music can provide a means of lifelong, not temporary, enjoyment.
A competent and effective teacher of music has to be capable of helping the student develop themselves beyond the basic skills of note reading, rhythm patterns and producing sounds.
Among the other areas influenced and reinforced by music study are: persistence, determination, perseverance, self-discipline, problem solving, goal setting, time management, pattern recognition, math relationships, spatial reasoning, hand to eye coordination, simple enjoyment, and a very special way to express our most complex emotions.
